About the author
LaQuitta Barnes is a former Title 1 reading teacher with over thirteen years of experience teaching scholars within the public school system in Houston, TX. She is passionate about exposing scholars to culturally inclusive resources that help inspire and challenge them to make rich textual connections. Through the years she served in various capacities such as Literacy Coach, District Mentor and Campus Administrator and was awarded campus Instructional Coach of the Year. As a versatile educator, LaQuitta has enjoyed transforming children’s lives through literature and reshaping their future. She was inspired to write Black Wall Street: The Spirit of Community because of the lack of age-appropriate text to teach notable moments in history such as this amazing story. Entrepreneurship is also close to her heart, for the past fourteen years she has found success as a licensed realtor and real estate investor. The rich history of Black Wall Street resonates with her family’s goal of promoting the importance of entrepreneurship and generational wealth. Along with her husband and two children, LaQuitta has a passion for revitalizing her hometown by providing quality homes and creating a stronger sense of community.

It is the year 1921 and, at the corner of Greenwood and Archer, lies Black Wall Street. Over 300 businesses can be found here, and they are all supported heavily by the residents of this thriving community. It is a time of racial segregation in America and one significant encounter causes a spark to become a flame. As we approach the 100th anniversary of this historical event, victims and survivors, this is a great opportunity to educate more learners on this rich history and for them to look at their neighborhood and imagine the impact Black Wall Street has had on the past as well as its effect on the future.

"Cleveland Shepard III"
I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about the history of the Black Wallstreet in Tulsa, OK. My family recently visited this historic site. This book emphasized African Americans having their own businesses and the support they had for one another as a community. This is an easy read for all children.
"Kevin Riles"
As we approach the 100th anniversary of the burning of Black Wall Street, this book serves as an essential tool in educating our children about the critical history and tragedy of the events that occurred there. The illustrations and story are wonderful. A people without knowledge of their history are doomed to repeat it. This is a must-read for every child so that we produce a future a absent of the the mistakes Of the past.
